The objective of this practice-based thesis is to study the production of reality television from the perspective of a cameraman. The thesis study addresses the production of a reality television show from preparatory planning phases to post production from the viewpoint of the camera operator. The study addresses the question of what is specifically required from a cameraman from the beginning to the end of a production.

The theoretical foundation of my thesis rests upon a variety of sources from the professional literature as well as online resources, as well as personal interviews with experts in the television industry. These interviews together with my own work experience strengthen the validity of this practice-based thesis. Following an introduction to the topic, I review the history and current state of reality television, followed by discussions of the specifics of the production process.

The design and progress of the productions process are influenced by the type of program that is being made as well as its target audience. In this thesis study, I compare the similarities and differences of large and small reality television productions. In addition, I introduce and discuss details and modern technical requirements of filming equipment, which greatly influences the final appearance of reality television productions. Following the technological advancement of camera equipment, a variety of functions are available which provide added value to reality television productions.
