The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to make a guide for basic education of physiotherapy students and to assist the physiotherapist’s work to test the movement control impairment of the neck. The guide was produced in cooperation with the orderer, physioterapist Sanna Garam Co.

The purpose of the thesis was to compile the current knowledge and testing methods about the movement impairment syndromes of the cervical spine in a compact and practical electronic form. The purpose was also to give knowledge for physiotherapists and physiotherapy students of this current and increasing issue in the form of a guide. There are four different syndromes and we used mainly Shirley Sahrmann’s book (2011) Movement System Impairment Syndromes of the Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spines to find the right testing methods.

The bachelor’s thesis includes two parts: a written report and a testing guide in electronic form. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of information based on the functional anatomy of the neck, neck pain and related causes and also the movement impairment syndromes of the cervical spine and their testing methods. The testing guide presents how to examine posture, gives background information about the movement impairment syndromes and how to test each syndrome. The guide also includes pictures of different testing positions and methods.

The guide in available in the Theseus database, University of Applied Sciences’ online library, from where it is freely available for physiotherapists and physiotherapy students.
