Opinnäytetyön aiheena oli selvittää millä tapaa Windows XP -käyttöjärjestelmä eroaa Windows 7 -käyttöjärjestelmästä ylläpidon näkökulmasta. Selvitys pohjautuu toimeksiantajan toiveeseen saada lisää tietoa Windows 7 -käyttöjärjestelmän erilaisista versiosta.

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää Windows XP:n ja Windows 7:n eroavaisuuksia tietoturvan, tiedonsiirron ja toimeksiantajan ohjelmien sekä laitteiden toiminnassa. Selvitystä suoritettiin virtualisoimalla Windows XP ja Windows 7 Ultimatea, joihin asennettiin Ring Ring Oy:n käytössä olevia ohjelmia. Lisäksi eroja kartoitettiin tutkimalla käyttöoikeuksia ja muistin käyttöä.

Selvityksen perusteella Windows 7 on edistynyt monella tapaa tietoturvaominaisuuksiltaan ja laiteajuritueltaan. Toimeksiantajan pöytäkoneisiin sopii ominaisuuksiltaan parhaiten Windows 7 Professional ja kannettaviin tietokoneisiin Windows 7 Enterprise.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of changing from Windows XP operating system to Windows 7 operating system for software, peripheral devices and other administrative changes. In addition, the goals of this study were to make recommendations for Ring Ring Oy’s future investments on computers and operating system versions.

Data for this study was collected by virtualization of three different operating systems. The operating systems used in this study were Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 32-bit and Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit. Softwares used in this study are used by Ring Ring Oy. Moreover, additional information was gathered by using internet sources from a wide variety of companies and communities.

This study shows that the security of Windows 7 has improved dramatically over Windows XP. Besides, while many of the programs used in the Windows XP environment worked on the 32-bit version of Windows 7, some of the programs had problems with the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Ultimately, all of the peripheral devices used by Ring Ring Oy worked on 32-bit and 64-bit version of Windows 7.
