The purpose of this thesis work was to explore and implement a DIY-made monitoring and controlling system. In this implementation, the monitoring and controlling system was used in home control and for home automation purposes. The thesis introduces different home control systems, home control/home automation as a general concept, the most common home automation applications, both in theory and in practice, and the concept of IoT.

The final implementation proved to be a versatile and affordable home control/home automation system. With the help of comprehensive amount of documentation for a do-it-yourself home control / home automation applications is a fast way to get started with one’s DIY project. The development of the devices and documentation constantly increases the the amount of applications and ideas for DIY projects.
