Orientation means interest for a new employee and his qualification. Orientation applies to all employees and its purpose is to give a proper image of work and principles. Studying orientation is important to find out what possibly needs developing. The purpose of this thesis was to describe those nurses´ experiences of orientation who have come to work at the Central Hospital of Kainuu on ward 9 during the past two years. The aim of this thesis was to produce information of the nurses´ experiences of orientation to the commissioner who can utilize the results of this thesis when making a new orientation program. The results of this thesis show which sectors of orientation needs developing. When a new employee gets a good orientation, the quality of nursing care develops. The aim was also that professional skills deeper. The results can be used in working life. The thesis was qualitative. The information for this thesis was collected by open questionaire. The respondents were six and they all were nurses. The material was analysed by qualitative analysis. The results showed that nurses showed that job instruction is not orientation. Orientation has not been planned and it has not been systematic. The orientation was carried out while working. More time should be used for orientation. Orientation in the CCU was regarded as good. The respondents had many ideas to develop orientation. Ideas were, for example that more time should be used, the orientator should be named and orientation should be planned. For further study we would like to suggest how orientators themselves experiences orientation. We would also like to study how the new orientation program has worked.
