Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the Kidney and Liver Association's co-operation with other local associations in Eastern Finland. This study attempted to clarify the cur-rent levels of co-operation between associations and-, views about co-operation, as well as to assess future development possibilities. The theoretical framework focused on the functioning of the association and its changes, as well as the requirements for co-operation between associations. Materials for the qualitative study were collected using thematice interviews. Interviews were conducted with the heads of five local associations from November–December 2016 and again in 2017. The participants of this study were the Kidney and Liver Associations of Southern- , Northern- and Eastern-Savonia, Central Finland, and North Karelia. The conclusions drawn from this study indicate that co-operation is prevalent, is met with a positive attitude and is seen as a good thing. Co-operation leads to increased visibility and it allows for a wider range of expertise to be utilised. At the same time the associations' functionality improves. Co-operation allows for increased resources and splitting of costs. Successful meet-ups lead to the possibility of gaining new, active members for activities. In conclusion, co-operation is important to the associations and their operations. The associations feel the need for increasing co-operation and the development of new activities. Successful experiences provide motivation to take advantage of new co-operation possibilities, which is very important for operations. Co-operation increases community and the efficacy of activities. There is strength in co-operation.
