The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to develop a visual arts group in Tampere Girls’ house that would encourage to creativity and self- expression. The aim of the study was to find out what an encouraging visual arts group is like. The visual arts group came together seven times in the autumn of 2014.

During the classes the group experimented with different visual arts materials and exercises, for example painting with music and collage. The point was to encourage the group members to work creatively without any stress or pressure.

Tampere Girls’ House is a place for girls and young women from ages 12 to 28. They organize different open activities, groups and events. The author of this thesis facilitated a visual arts group in the spring of 2014 in Tampere Girls’ House. It turned out that there would be a need for this kind of activity.

The material for this thesis was gathered by observing the group in the classes and by inquiries from the participants of the group. A diary written during the study was also an important tool when gathering material. Material was also gathered by interviewing the manager of Tampere Girls’ House. Knowledge and information about art therapy, creativity and group dynamics were applied in the thesis.

The end result of the thesis was that the things that encourage to creative self-expression include a successful preparation in the beginning of the class and clearly defined visual arts exercises. It is also important for the participant to feel safe in the group and that the instructor has a calm and encouraging way to lead the group.

The results of the study will be instantly put to use, because the visual arts group activity is going to be continued in Tampere Girls’ House lead by the author of this thesis.
