The aim of this thesis was to investigate if Tyregrip helps to decrease ve-locities and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Tyregrip is a sur-facing for streets which increases friction. The thesis was commissioned by the City of Järvenpää. In Finland, Tyregrip surfacing has previously only been used in a few places for pedestrians cycling laness and is now being used for very first time on start of crosswalks.

Before installing the surfacing chosen target areas were investigated by clarifying when the rush hours occur and what was the amount of users. Velocities were measured before installing the surfacing to set the baseline. Also calculations on surface wear and installation to target areas was documented.

The suitability of the surfacing for use in target areas was estimated by measuring velocities after installation. By analyzing these results, it was possible to clarify how the surfacing affected peoples’ behavior.

The indicators used were velocity-measurement, visual observations and interviews. The biggest influence the surfacing had was the in increase-of drivers’ caution and respect for pedestrians and cyclist. In regards to ve-locities, the surfacing only had a small decreasing effect.
