The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to collect experiences from an alliance model. The thesis was commissioned by YIT Rakennus Oy. YIT´s goal is to get material on the experiences of alliance projects from the point of view of the contractor and customer. The information obtained from the thesis can be used to develop future alliance projects.

The alliance model and cost control were discussed including the basic information about the alliance model and methods and analyzes used in the cost control. Also, communication between the different parties was dealt with. The thesis has a novelty value as it has not been studied from this point of view previously. The research methods used were interviews. For the theoretical part of the thesis publications, internet sources and YIT´s internal network were utilized.

As a result of the thesis material on the advantages and disadvantages of the alliance model was produced. The advantages include a good transparency and cooperation and open information (so called open book) for all parties. There is room for improvement in communication and in developing of personal chemistry. Cost management is in good shape in all projects concerning this thesis. Cost management has been developed for a long time and cost savings have been obtained e.g. through intensifying engineering aspects. Costmanagement techniques have been developed to meet the project requirements. Programs used are TAS, Excel and Quintet and new programs are being looked for and developed in cost management all the time. Communication is generally good in every project and communication methods used are e-mail, phone calls, meetings and face-to-face communication. The challenge in communication is the large number of stakeholders and partners. The results and material of the thesis can be used to develop future alliance projects.
