Metallirumpalin tuplapedaalitekniikoita ja kestävyyttä : Flatfoot-tekniikka ja nilkkatekniikka

This thesis presents an accurate analysis of two double-pedal techniques used in metal drumming and how to practice them while building stamina and endurance which are required in the profession of a metal drummer. The techniques are the flat-foot technique and the ankle technique. The aspects for the double-pedal training plans were the areas of basic, speed and maximum endurance training that are usually used for building aerobic endurance in sports.

This thesis is focused on problem solving. The purpose of this study was to understand in detail how these two double-pedal techniques work, which muscle groups are involved and whether the tempo has an influence on how these techniques are being used. Some pedal settings, for example finding the suitable pedal spring tension according to one's foot weight and the movements of the ankles, are also introduced. Finding the most suitable spring tension can make a big difference in learning the double-pedal techniques. However, the focus of this thesis is on learning the double-pedal techniques by controlling the different leg muscle groups. Therefore, all the pedal settings are not described in detail any more than it is necessary. The aim of this study was also to create new tools and ideas for practicing the double-pedal techniques and building stamina in metal drumming. Basically, the question was how to find a healthy balance between practicing and resting in order to make progress and to build stamina in metal drumming.

One correct way of how to practice and plan the practice sessions that fits all does not exist. Just to name a few factors, this is because everyone has different goals, motivation, possibilities for using time to practice and experience in drumming. However, some practical practice methods and plans are introduced in this thesis. As a conclusion it could be stated that making the effort to learn the drumming techniques properly and to practice mostly on the low impact basic endurance training area can notably improve a drummer's endurance in metal drumming. A functioning technique saves a lot of energy while playing. Higher impact levels of training, such as speed and maximum endurance training, are good for making the body to adapt on physical exertion and playing fast music. However, it is recommended that the portion of these high impact levels of training are kept low in weekly training plans in order to ensure enough recovering for the body between exercises, which is essential in order to make progress.
