Kiviesine, tchamahia.
A stone object, tchamahia. Made of light brown hornfels, it is a flat rectangular slab. The object has been planned around the naturally dark brown stripes in the stone, chipped to shape and carefully polished. The object tapers slightly towards the other end. The wider end has been hewn sharp as a knife. There are red stains at the sharp end.

Käyttö |
muinaiset pueblointiaanit/Ancient Puebloan peoples tchamahia, kuokka? / tchamachia, hoe? This type of stone objects have been found in some quantity in the Mesa Verde area. These objects resemble the ritual stones of modern Hopi (and other Puebloan Indians), the tchamahia and the term is extended to cover similar stones from the archaeological finds (Mesa Verde National Park, 1991). The tchamahias are believed to represent an ancient agricultural tool, a hoe, or a knife, which then developed into a ritual form as well (Rohn, 1971). Some of the Mesa Verde tchamahias have been found hafted to a wooden digging stick (Mesa Verde Museum Exhibit Guide, 19871), some appear so brittle that they could hardly have been used as hoe-like tools (Rohn, 1971), and some tchamahias have been discovered within the estufas (kivas). |
