This study looks at lifestyle change for overweight adults as stories. It is also intended to understand the multidimensionality of lifestyle change for overweight adults. The study is part of a larger two-year web-based Transformation lifestyle intervention conducted by the University of Jyväskylä and the Central Finland Medical District. The intervention took place between 2015 and 2018. Data from the study consisted of semi-structured online diaries of the online cycle I and II of overweight adults (n=18) who participated in the Transformation Travel Intervention. Those selected for the study had dropped weight by at least 5% during the first 12 months of the intervention. The data was analysed in a dataset by a narrative study excerpt. Through the analysis of the data, two types of stories were built about lifestyle change in overweight adults: Smallest Steps and Accepting Forward. With Smallest Steps — in the story type, descriptions of lifestyle change and emotional states were associated with behavioral change and awareness exercises based on acceptance and commitment therapy. Physical activity gave rise to joy and pleasure. Descriptions of changes in eating behavior were characterized by varying experiences of emotional states. Negative emotional states caused emotional eating and gluttonous behavior. The realization of regular food rhythm and the increase in healthy food choices generated joy and contentment of success. Social support was Smallest Steps — an important generator of positive emotional states in the story type. Accepting forward - in the story type, descriptions of lifestyle change and emotional states were associated with mindfulness and acceptance exercises based on acceptance and commitment therapy. The emotional states generated by mindfulness exercises were positive bodily experiences evoked by mindful eating and breathing exercises. The observational self and acceptance processes exercises generated intense depiction of emotional states, such as self-accusations, inadequacy, and experiences of outsider and lovelessness. Accepting negative emotional states required a new approach to one's thoughts and emotions, which took time and generated conflicting emotional states. Approval skills were an important part of Accepting Forward — the lifestyle change of the story type. Based on the study, it can be concluded that lifestyle change for overweight adults based on acceptance and commitment therapy is individual and generates diverse emotional states. Aware, dealing with and accepting emotional states contribute to health acts consistent with your own values.
