Due to high impedance of the passive pickups used in electric guitars the connected guitar cable can influence the signal produced by the pickup. In interviews conducted by Astia-studio in Lappeenranta customers of the recording studio stated to have perceived a difference in guitar tone depending on the cable used. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to identify how the differences in guitar cables affect the signal produced by guitars in a recording studio setting. Because there are various ways of recording electric guitars, the effects of differences in load impedance from devices like amplifiers or effects units are also examined. In addition, the effect of the electronics inside the guitar are analysed briefly. The research focuses on differences observable in the frequency domain. Multiple pickups, cables, amplifiers, effects units, DI-boxes, and other devices often used in recording or playing guitar were measured. Equivalent circuits for the devices under investigation were formed based on existing sources. Based on the measurements and equivalent circuits the devices were characterised based on their electrical properties. The equipment was modelled in the circuit simulator software LTSpice, which was used to analyse the differences of the devices and their effect on the frequency response of the system they create. As a result of the thesis the capacitances measured from the cables and loading devices were found to affect the resonant frequency of the guitar pickup. The capacitances of the pickup, cable and load sum up increasing the total capacitance, which then reduces the resonant frequency of the lowpass filter formed by the physical construction of the pickup. A higher capacitance in the cable and load has a greater effect on the resonant frequency, which can possibly be heard by ear. The resistance in the load was observed to affect the gain of the resonance peak. A lower resistance caused the peak to be attenuated, also weakening the signal received to the loading device. As an additional result of the thesis, is the attached assortment of measured capacitances, inductances and resistances from the devices used in the thesis. Also attached are the plotted impedances in relation to frequency, received from the performed frequency sweep measurements on the cables and loading devices.
