Väestöjen moninaistumista kuvaava käsite “superdiversiteetti” on viime vuosikymmenen ajan lisääntyvästi toiminut lähestymistapana muuttoliikkeiden tutkimuksessa.
The concept of bilingualism in Finnish political discourse is predominantly used in the meaning of official or state bilingualism, focussing on the two constitutionally defined ‘national languages’; i.e. Finnish and Swedish. Legally, both Finnish and Swedish speakers have a right for public services, such as schooling or health care, in their first language. On the other hand, several language ideological debates have taken place in recent years, challenging especially the status of Swedish in administration and education. These debates have reshaped the discourses on what counts as bilingualism. This paper analyses on one hand the historical discursive development of the “official will” presented in the Finnish Government programmes on the concept of bilingualism and the current language ideological debates that take place in an Internet discussion site, offered by a Finnish newspaper, on the other. These two discourses seem to operate on separate fields and among different actors. We show that language policy discourses are essentially multi‐sited: they confirm, contest and challenge views that are produced by various stakeholders over time.
This article introduces the AFinLA-e thematic issue focusing on creative inquiry in applied linguistics. This is a relatively new field of research, but it is expanding fast. Our aim is therefore to give a brief general introduction into this transdisciplinary field – its trajectories, approaches, methods and future directions – and to describe the contributions that the articles in this issue make into the growing body of work. The articles display a variety of research topics and approaches, illustrative of the diversity of research in the field. Art adopts a number of different roles: context, medium, process, partner, or the outcome of a research project. The articles cover various art forms, such as music, literature, visual arts, social circus, dance and photography, as well as a number of approaches to language and communication.
This article examines the role of languages and language learning when adult migrants are narrating their integration and construction of identities in the new country, in particular, in work and professional communities, education and social life. We focus on two narratives by Russian-speaking women who migrated in Finland in the 2000s from Russia and Ukraine. Both of them have worked in various jobs and studied in different degree programs. The analysis reveals the importance of gaining opportunities to learn Finnish both formally as well as informally at work and in social life. The narratives also show that an adult migrant needs to be determined in learning Finnish independently even though it might cause emotional stress especially in the beginning. Finally, the article discusses some implications concerning language opportunities and barriers experienced by participants when dealing with their professional career paths and how these experiences are intertwined with integration policy.
Kansallisteatterin Kiertuenäyttämö käynnisti keväällä 2016 projektin, jossa kysytään, mikä on koti ja mitä on kotoutuminen. Toinen koti -projektissa kohtaavat pakolaistaustaiset ja “kantalaiset”, Suomessa syntyneet taiteilijat. Esityksen ensi-ilta on 16. marraskuuta 2017 Kansallisteatterin Omapohja-näyttämöllä.
This article examines working age Russian-speaking migrants, and their paths in looking for a place in the Finnish work and professional communities. The integration process is examined in three focal settings: 1) aspiration settings in which migrants are preparing to participate in work and professional communities; 2) achievement settings in which migrants have successfully entered work and professional communities, and 3) abandonment settings in which migrants have been marginalized from work and professional communities and have given up their aspirations to integrate into these communities. The data consist of 3 thematic interviews and the analysis of the data is focusing on the informants’ narratives of their life and professional career paths. Conclusions were drawn about the ways in which different environments are reflected in linguistic practices and how the importance of languages is perceived in the integration into the working life.
This article is based on an extensive research project (Towards Future Literacy Pedagogies, ToLP1 ) that deals with the literacy practices of Finnish and immigrant pupils, mother tongue (MT) and foreign language (FL) teachers. The overall aim of the project is to explore and interpret literacy practices both in school and out-of-school contexts by employing large-scale quantitative research approaches as well as qualitative classroom observations and teacher and pupil interviews. In this article, we will report findings of the comprehensive survey, our specific focus being on the materials and media the teachers and pupils use in school and in their free time. We are interested in exploring in which ways the media landscapes are either similar or different and to what extent the digital worlds have reached the language classroom. The results show that there is a growing gap between the practices in school and the way in which pupils use the various media in their free time for informal learning and for social existence. It seems that textbooks and other print-based materials dominate at school, whereas a quite dynamic and multilayered digital world is the reality for pupils outside school.
How do people understand belonging and what kinds of stances toward belonging do they take? What kind of knowledge or ways of knowing (EISNER, 2008) does artistic practice yield about belonging? We ask these questions in this article, which is based on the research project Crossing Borders, in which we used participatory arts-based methods to study belonging. We invited participants to explore the notion of belonging in three parallel workshops drawing on different art forms, film, writing and visual arts. The goal of the workshops was for each participant to produce an artwork that deals with belonging. In the article, we identify four stances that the participants expressed toward the concept of belonging and explore the ways in which their ideas were manifested in the artworks. We analyze the workshop discussions, the participants' interviews and the artworks, and demonstrate on both the conceptual and material level that artistic practice can provide extremely nuanced and situated knowledge, or ways of knowing, about belonging. We argue that the artworks anchor the ever-shifting stances into material forms and expressions. Artistic practice is thus one way of defining and contextualizing the fluid concept of belonging.
