Dorothea Breier’s dissertation “The Vague Feeling of Belonging of a Transcultural Generation. An Ethnographic Study on Germans and their Descendants in Contemporary Helsinki” (2017) focuses on Germans and their descendants in Finland. Breier explores in her monograph how they (de)construct boundaries between German- and Finnishness by simultaneously drawing on national categories and challenging the same moments later. She also examines the ways in in which people position themselves within such frameworks, and what impact this self-assertion has on individuals and their lives. While Breier’s focus is on the descendants of Germans in contemporary Helsinki, the study highlights the importance of taking into consideration the intergenerational, societal and historic context when exploring the descendant generation’s views, emotional experiences and behaviour.
Tutkimusmenetelmänäni on Game of Thrones -videopelistä tehtyjen Let’s Play -videoiden analysointi erityisesti pelaaja-kertojan esiintymiseen keskittyen. Tutkimuksen aineisto on koottu satunnaisotantana kahdelta eri videonjakoalustalta (Twitch, Youtube). Let’s Play -videoiden kautta pelaaja-kertojat osallistuvat fandomin aineettomaan vaihdantaan, tuoden oman panoksensa Valtaistuinpelin universumiin. Game of Thrones -pelin Let’s Play -videoissa pohdinta keskittyy moraalisiin valintoihin.
Laadullisesti analysoiduista aineistoista voidaan tarkastella kirjoittamisen terapeuttisuuteen liittyviä ulottuvuuksia. Tutkimusta kirjoittamisen vaikuttavuudesta tulee lisätä. Kirjoittamisen hyvinvointivaikutuksiin kohdistuvan tutkimuksen painopistettä tulisi siirtää kohti vuorovaikutuksellista kirjallisuusterapiaa, sen prosesseihin ja pidempikestoisiin kirjoittajaryhmiin lyhyiden ekspressiivisen kirjoittamisen interventioiden sijaan.
Numerous instruments have been developed to measure gaming-related health problems based on “internet gaming disorder” (IGD) in the third section of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and “gaming disorder” (GD) in the International Classification of Diseases (11th rev.). However, the criteria in the manuals tend to be operationalized in numerous diverse ways, which can make screening outcomes incomparable. A content validity analysis is needed to reassess the relationships between the diagnostic criteria and the items that operationalize them. The IGD and GD criteria were divided into sematic components. A qualitative content validity analysis was carried out for all items employed by the 17 instruments that claim to measure either construct by their criteria in English. In all but one instrument, the operationalizations did not include all criterion components. There were two main reasons found for this: the components had simply been left out or had been alternatively modified into other components. Criteria that were vaguely described in the manuals were sources of lower content validity items. The study implies that many of the problems in IGD and GD measurement derive from criteria operationalization and original manual descriptions. The conclusion provides practical recommendations that researchers can apply to improve the content validity of their measurement.
Background Open peer review practices are increasing in medicine and life sciences, but in social sciences and humanities (SSH) they are still rare. We aimed to map out how editors of respected SSH journals perceive open peer review, how they balance policy, ethics, and pragmatism in the review processes they oversee, and how they view their own power in the process. Methods We conducted 12 pre-registered semi-structured interviews with editors of respected SSH journals. Interviews consisted of 21 questions and lasted an average of 67 min. Interviews were transcribed, descriptively coded, and organized into code families. Results SSH editors saw anonymized peer review benefits to outweigh those of open peer review. They considered anonymized peer review the “gold standard” that authors and editors are expected to follow to respect institutional policies; moreover, anonymized review was also perceived as ethically superior due to the protection it provides, and more pragmatic due to eased seeking of reviewers. Finally, editors acknowledged their power in the publication process and reported strategies for keeping their work as unbiased as possible. Conclusions Editors of SSH journals preferred the benefits of anonymized peer review over open peer and acknowledged the power they hold in the publication process during which authors are almost completely disclosed to editorial bodies. We recommend journals to communicate the transparency elements of their manuscript review processes by listing all bodies who contributed to the decision on every review stage.
Augmented reality (AR) picturebooks combine printed children’s literature with augmented reality. This study examines the shared reading of the Finnish AR picturebook Mur, eli karhu (2016) by Kaisa Happonen and Anne Vasko. The main aim of the study is to explore the playful reading experience of three Finnish families with children between the ages of 4 and 6. Three main categories of engagement with the book are discussed in the article: interpretation, negotiation, and play. The findings of the study suggest that children are skilled users of mobile digital media but may not understand the content of AR without parental mediation. In addition, parents and educators are required to have substantial pedagogical and aesthetic knowledge to successfully support children’s engagement with hybrid and multimodal literary works. This knowledge involves understanding both children’s literature and the digital medium.
The use of metaphors is prevalent when talking about music in everyday life as well as in more professional contexts. As such, the role of metaphors in describing and understanding music has been a topic for philosophical discussions and more recently also for empirical research. While most of the focus has traditionally been on the meaning of music, in this article we consider metaphors as related to the personal meaningfulness of music. More specifically, we investigate metaphoric expressions in personal narratives of fond game music memories, aiming to understand what the metaphors tell about the relationship between music and the listener. Following the theory of conceptual metaphor, we treat metaphors not as merely rhetorical figures of speech but as a pervasive feature of human meaning-making, that is, as related to the way we understand abstract things by conceptually mapping our understanding of concrete things. Our data is a set of 183 Finnish stories about personally meaningful memories with game music. We analysed the data in several steps, starting with the identification of metaphoric expressions and their source domains, followed by reducing them to their image schematic structures. Finally, we used the image schematic structures to organise the metaphors into 8 wider categories: Agency, Force, Spatial relations, Transfer, Mediator, Linkage, Tangible thing/object and Sensation. Besides presenting these categories as outlining different aspects of how the listeners’ conceptualise the personal meaningfulness of game music, we discuss the theory of conceptual metaphor as a viable approach for understanding musical experiences more generally.
This large-scale meta-analysis aimed to provide the most comprehensive synthesis to date of the available evidence from the pre-COVID period on risk and protective factors for (internet) gaming disorder (as defined in the DSM-5 or ICD-11) across all studied populations. The risk/protective factors included demographic characteristics, psychological, psychopathological, social, and gaming-related factors. In total, we have included 1586 effects from 253 different studies, summarizing data from 210557 participants. Apart from estimating these predictive associations and relevant moderating effects, we implemented state-of-the-art adjustments for publication bias, psychometric artifacts, and other forms of bias arising from the publication process. Additionally, we carried out an in-depth assessment of the quality of underlying evidence by examining indications of selective reporting, statistical inconsistencies, the typical power of utilized study designs to detect theoretically relevant effects, and performed various sensitivity analyses. The available evidence suggests the existence of numerous moderately strong and highly heterogeneous risk factors (e.g., male gender, depression, impulsivity, anxiety, stress, gaming time, escape motivation, or excessive use of social networks) but only a few empirically robust protective factors (self-esteem, intelligence, life satisfaction, and education; all having markedly smaller effect sizes). We discuss the theoretical implications of our results for prominent theoretical models of gaming disorder and for the existing and future prevention strategies. The impact of various examined biasing factors on the available evidence seemed to be modest, yet we identified shortcomings in the measurement and reporting practices.
As videogames are being increasingly recognized as a prominent cultural force, there is also a growing interest in the study of video game music within academia. Published in 2021, The Cambridge Companion to Video Game Music is the most recent milestone in establishing video game music research as a credible field of research. The book situates itself naturally on the same continuum with the founding of the Ludomusicology Research Group in 2011 and the launch of the Journal of Sound and Music in Games in 2020. With twenty-four chapters and over four hundred pages, the Companion is probably the largest and most comprehensive collection on game music studies so far. The overarching ethos of the editors Melanie Fritsch and Tim Summers could be described as a warm welcome to a plurality of views on videogame music and indeed, the diversity of perspectives is perhaps the most notable feature of the book: The chapters, divided into six sections each with an overall introduction, discuss a multitude of themes such as chiptune and the early history of videogame music, creation of videogame music, analytical approaches and psychological perspectives, questions relating to culture and identity and finally also game music beyond the context of gaming. Moreover, the list of writers includes not only researchers from a variety of backgrounds, but also people working within the game music industry. As a flipside to the plurality, several chapters appear more like overviews of the theme or suggestions for an approach rather than fully developed perspectives on videogame music. Especially some essential issues pointed out throughout the chapters, such as the concept of interactivity and centrality of player's perspective, would merit further and integrative theoretical discussion. Likewise certain broad themes, such as aesthetics and philosophy of videogame music, empirical research, and personal uses and functions of videogame music, are left to lesser regard. Despite this, the Companion is valuable as an approachable and comprehensive overview of videogame music studies that could prove insightful to not only those interested in the subject but, due to its inclusive and open approach, also to music researchers more broadly.
Selkeän tarinan sijaan lukijalle tarjotaan erilaisia mahdollisten tarinoiden juuria.
The simulation theory of empathy suggests that we use motor processing to empathise, through modelling the actions of others. Similarly, research into embodied music cognition posits that music, particularly musical rhythm, is perceived as a motor stimulus. In both cases, the human Mirror Neuron System (MNS) is put forward as a potential underlying mechanism. If this is the case, some overlap may exist between the ability to empathise with others, and the ability to perceive rhythm in music. The present study investigated this relationship indirectly, through the study of individual differences in Trait Empathy and rhythmic entrainment. Undergraduate students (N = 237) completed a questionnaire battery including the EQ-Short, BFAS and questions about musical and dance experience. A relationship was observed between Agreeableness on the BFAS and the EQ-Short (r = .554). Tests on a controlled sample of these participants (n = 11) found a relationship between Trait Empathy and performance on a rhythmic entrainment task, involving spontaneous movement to a musical stimulus (rτ = -.686). A novel measure of rhythmic entrainment was used, assessing each participant on the time taken to re-establish entrainment following an abrupt change in tempo. The findings suggest that Empathy and rhythmic entrainment may utilise similar brain regions. These regions may also be associated with the MNS, although neuroimaging data would be required to confirm this. Qualitative observations of the participants’ responses to the various musical stimuli were also recorded, and may inform future study. Furthermore, the observed relationship between Agreeableness and Trait Empathy may have implications for how these personality constructs are treated in the literature.
Beauty and the Bastard (Karukoski 2005), a pioneering and award-winning youth film set within the emerging Finnish hip hop culture, draws on early twenty-first-century music-related youth films produced in the United States and reaches out thematically and musically to both African American and Finnish hip hop culture and rap music. Set in a predominantly White Finnish society, the film confronts many representational challenges concerning diversity, whether racial, class or gender. Based on contextual analysis of audio-visual representations, we discuss how such categories contribute to the construction of the film’s ‘authenticity’ – a key notion of hip hop culture – as a localized representation. We argue that in its project of localizing hip hop authenticity in early 2000s Finland, the film retains, rather than challenges or questions, representations of normative Whiteness, oppressive class distinctions and unequal gender norms.
As a former male model whose modelling career lasted 25 years (1988–2013) and as a researcher, I am interested in the production of meanings and knowledge related to representations of masculinity. As a gay former male model who was classified as ‘other’ but represented the normative ideal and passed for straight in fashion shows and photographs, I look back on images of myself differently and against the grain. I analyse three of my fashion photographs – taken for the Finnish tabloid City in 1993, when AIDS was considered the ‘gay plague’, but never published – in terms of critical studies of masculinities, gay and sexuality studies, and queer theory. I speculate and examine gestures, facial expressions and poses in the photographs that were still intolerable and prevented their publication 30 years ago. The publication of my photographs now is concrete proof that masculine gestured performances are becoming more inclusive and diverse.
This article investigates musical grit and sisu, inner fortitude, as predecessors of flow, flourishing and personal growth. Grit has been identified as an important factor for success. Our aim was to increase knowledge of the benefits of intensified music education for building grit, resilience and fortitude. Data were collected with mixed methods in 2020 from two schools and 96 children. Surveys were filled out by students in both music and regular classes. Qualitative data about music education experiences were collected through interviews and writing tasks from the music class students and interviews with their teachers. Music classes scored higher than regular classes in perseverance, certain dimensions of flow and musical flourishing. Musical flourishing correlated with playing years and had high correlation with self-efficacy, flow experiences and general well-being. The sequence of facing, but also beating, challenges as a group in musical performances and then feeling flow and flourishing seemed to be beneficial for children’s personal growth. Students in music classes learned not only musical skills, but also resilient and optimistic thinking related to their challenges. The theoretical model of Trust, Hope and Love was revised to display how sisu, the inner fortitude, advances flourishing.
Kuopiossa toimi vuosina 1980-1986 uusekspressionistinen kuvataiteilijaryhmittymä, jolle annettiin mediassa nimitys Kuopion koulu. Teoreettisen taustan osalta käytössä on eritoten sosiologi Pierre Bourdieun kenttäteoria.
(Erra & Svinhufvud 2017).
The uncanny experience refers to unsettling feelings that emerge when confronted with events that seem remotely familiar but still strange and opaque. It relies on magical thinking, as the experience seems to take place emphatically in the sensorial realm, partly lacking symbolic quality. In this article, I approach the uncanny as representing an inability to represent, revealing discontinuities and gaps in experience. I suggest that the uncanny representation can be approached creatively and turned into an aesthetic experience. The uncanny as an aesthetic experience enables a creative elaboration of being unable to overcome a gap. Thus, it can contribute to self-growth and deepening of a subjective sense of self. To illustrate the creative potential of the uncanny I look at two examples, one from literature and the other a personal account. I further elaborate on the position of the uncanny in the field of aesthetics by comparing it with the sublime experience and suggest that the uncanny is a negative of the sublime. In the sublime, a representation of the infinite and unspeakable is formed, while the uncanny, in contrast, represents the impossibility of doing so.
This multidisciplinary study enforces a suggested link between everyday aesthetic experiences and restoration. The studied phenomenon is staycation, a short-term holiday spent at home or at one’s home region, to identify how people use a (culturally) familiar environment for everyday aesthetic enjoyment and how that influences restoration. This focus minimises the potential effect of long-distance travel, novelty and escapism to restoration. Staycation has not been studied before from the perspective of everyday aesthetics and restoration. I explore staycation through a lens of qualitative media analysis; history and empirical research of holiday-making; and theories in everyday aesthetics.
This article provides a critical overview of musical identities as a research topic. A broad distinction between identities in music (IIM) and music in identities (MII) highlights how musical engagement is central to identity construction. These concepts are integrated with recent advances in psychological theory derived from enactive cognition (4E cognition) to propose a new framework for understanding musical identities, Musical Identities in Action (MIIA). This framework foregrounds musical identities as dynamic (constantly evolving, dialogical, and actively performed), embodied (shaped by how music is physically expressed and experienced), and situated (emergent from interaction with social contexts, technologies, and culture). Musical identities are presented as fluid and constructed through embodied and situated action. Interdisciplinary research on music and adolescence is utilized to show how the MIIA framework can be applied to specific contexts and how musical identities interact with other aspects of life. Examples of the embodied nature of musical identities are provided from early interactions to professional performance and everyday informal engagement. Technology is highlighted as one topical and situated context, using digital playlists and a recent online improvisation project as examples. Implications of the MIIA framework for education and health are also presented, proposing that a key goal of music education is the development of positive musical identities. Recent advances in humanities research such as post-qualitative inquiry (PQI) and metamodern philosophical theory are proposed as useful multidisciplinary approaches for developing new knowledge related to musical identities.
Background: Physical activity (PA) for adolescents is an important health promotion habit to develop, yet other activities may be more appealing during this stage in life. According to the displacement hypothesis, time on digital games takes away the opportunity to be physically active. As there is a notable decline in PA levels between the ages of 11y- 15y in Finland, there is an urgent need to investigate potential areas that contribute to the decline. According to the 2021 Finnish Player Barometer, 65% of Finns play digital games regularly. The aims of this study were to investigate the associations between PA and digital gaming, and to examine how these associations may change by gaming genres. 16th European Public Health Conference 2023 ii245 Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/eurpub/article/33/Supplement_2/ckad160.624/7327399 by University of Jyvaskyla user on 26 October 2023 Methods: A Finnish national representative sample (n = 1979) of 11y15y olds, completed a self-report survey in spring 2022. Variables included PA behaviour, the frequency of digital gameplay, by sport simulation and Esports genres, and various confounders (gender, age, disability, economic status). Analyses were carried out by chi-square tests and multilogistic regression analyses (no/low activity as reference categories). Results: A third (32%) reported daily PA. Daily digital gameplay was more common among males (74%) than females (26%) and decreased from 11y (53%), 13y (30%) to 15y (17%) olds. After controlling for confounders, playing ball sport simulations (e.g. FIFA) was associated with taking part in 5 or more days/ week of PA, or sport club participation (OR = 2.8, CI = 1.7- 4.4), whereas playing a lot of first-person shooter games, as an Esport, was negatively associated with sport club participation (OR = 0.6, CI = 0.4-0.9) when compared to the reference categories. Conclusions: The displacement hypothesis was supported partly among Esport players, but not by simulated sport gamers. Targeted interventions to promote physical activity with digital gaming, require a genre-specific approach. Key messages: Associations between physical activity and digital gaming activity among young adolescents is genre specific. Frequent playing of digital games were more common among male 11-15y olds than females.
The European Heritage Label (EHL) is a recent flagship heritage action of the European Union and focuses on the European dimension of Europe’s history and heritage as part of the Union’s cultural policy. One of the central concerns of the EU’s cultural policy is to generate a sense of belonging and identity among European citizens. While efficient promotion of the visibility of the EHL among European audiences could be expected corresponding to the political objectives, the EHL continues to struggle with broader public recognition. Based on fieldwork findings, the article discusses the visibility of the EHL action as a network of heritage sites that challenges national narratives by promoting a European dimension of heritage. The article identifies diverse shortcomings in creating public visibility, such as the missed opportunity of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 for creating useful synergies. The findings suggest that the EHL has potential to initiate public debate of what is European heritage, which may result in enhancing social cohesion in Europe. However, the label would benefit from the development of a joint strategy for improving the visibility of the EHL network at the local, national and European levels.
This article discusses the ‘computer game’ as a pragmatic concept. A dual nature of the computer game as both a pragmatic idea and a pragmatic meaning is introduced. Practical meanings of the computer game correspond with the concrete effects that engaging with computer games produces in an individual. Practical ideas of the computer game correspond with the subjectively constituted conceptual families concerning the computer game’s assumed practical meaning. Individual computer games can be considered flat or round depending on the range of their practical meanings. Thus, the article contributes to the study of cultural objects by offering a framework for examining the evolution and existence of such objects as cross-cultural practical entities – less in terms of communication, media, and materiality, and more in terms of concrete actions and events that individuals across societies commence and conceptualize.
