Globalisoitumisen aikakausi on mahdollistanut vapaasti liikkuvan työvoiman ja myös lisääntyvän maahanmuuton. Siirryttäessä kulttuurista toiseen kulttuuri-identiteetit hämärtyvät: toiset yrittävät säilyttää näennäisen yhtenäisen entisen kulttuuri-identiteettinsä torjumalla kaikki vaikutteet uudesta kulttuurista, kun taas toiset hyväksyvät uuden hybridisen identiteettinsä. Voidaksemme paremmin ymmärtää identiteetin etsinnän neuvotteluja sekä oman paikan etsimistä yhteiskunnassa, on tärkeää tutkia tapoja, joilla maahanmuuttajat rakentavat identiteettejään diskurssin kautta. Koska kirjallisuus on todellisuuden heijastumaa, voimme olettaa, että romaanin White Teeth henkilöhahmojen identiteetin rakentumisen tutkiminen antaisi viitteitä niihin ongelmiin, joita maahanmuuttajat kokevat muutettaessa kulttuurista toiseen. Heidän identiteettinsä olivat alituiseen muuttuvia rakennelmia, joiden eri puolia he korostivat eri tilanteissa.

Englanninkielisissä maissa, kuten muuallakin maailmassa, yhteiskuntaluokkaerot tulevat esiin puheessa.
In the introduction to the special issue “Languaging the worker: globalized governmentalities in/of language in peripheral spaces”, we take up the notion of governmentality as a means to interrogate the complex relationship between language, labor, power and subjectivity in peripheral multilingual spaces. Our aim here is to argue for the study of governmentality as a viable and growing approach in critical sociolinguistic research. As such, in this introduction, we first discuss key concepts germane to our interrogations, including the notions of governmentality, languaging, peripherality and language worker. We proceed to map out five ethnographically and discourse-analytically informed case studies. These examine diverse actors in different settings pertaining to the domain of work. Finally we chart how the case studies construe the issue of languaging the worker through a governmentality frame.

This research examines the effect of normativity on difficulties experienced with English oral production in Finland and Japan. Moyer’s classification of factors influencing second language acquisition (2004) as well as language ideology theory (Garrett, 2010; Milroy, 2007) are used as a framework for an analysis of 56 semi-structured interviews with Finnish and Japanese adult learners of intermediate level English. Self-reported experiences related to speaking English were annotated with appropriate codes and analyzed using content analysis. The results show that normativity related to the English language explains many of the difficulties learners experience with speaking English, and that this normativity is essentially connected to social factors as well as instruction and input factors in language learning.

"White field, black seeds – who can sow? Although the riddle from which this these words are taken comes from oral tradition, it refers to the ability to write, a skill which in most Nordic countries was not regarded as necessary for everyone. And yet a significant number of ordinary people with no access to formal schooling took up the pen and produced a variety of highly interesting texts: diaries, letters, memoirs, collections of folklore and handwritten newspapers. This collection presents the work of primarily Nordic scholars from fields such as linguistics, history, literature and folklore studies who share an interest in the production, dissemination and reception of written texts by non-privileged people during the long nineteenth century. "
This article presents and discusses views on grammar and its role in formal language learning amongst Finnish university students. The results are based on a questionnaire which was distributed to students at the University of Jyväskylä as part of institutional action research. The background to the project was a feeling amongst some teachers of increased divergence between student respectively language teacher understandings of the role of grammar in language teaching. This concern raised the need to find out how students view grammar. The knowledge about thoughts on grammar amongst students would then help teachers to adjust and adept the way grammar is used in language teaching. The main finding of the questionnaire was that a majority of the students think of grammar as a valuable asset in language learning, but at the same time have somewhat different understandings of grammar. In this context grammar is understood as a metalinguistic set of (also normative) statements of regularities in language which is the way most students think of grammar. Three different student perspectives on grammar are distinguished. These include a normative, functional and structural perspective. Since all answers in the questionnaire couldn’t be placed within these categories, a fourth category, “other” was also included.
This is a historical corpus study of the words tea, coffee, and chocolate, examining the occurrence and semantic changes between 1640 and 1920. The uses of these words are also investigated in a sociohistorical and cultural context: in what ways do the uses of these words by men and women differ, and what does the use of these words in texts say about the English society between 1640 and 1920? The concordance software WordSmith Tools has been used to find occurrences of the words including spelling variations and compounds in a historical corpus of 12.2 million words. The findings were sorted into categories of meaning varying from ‘produce’ to ‘social events’, verbs and colours, among others. The analysis has two parts: first, meaning and prevalence, and secondly, sociolinguistic aspects, genre, and the impact of the empire on life in Britain. Over all, it was found that tea was in markedly more frequent use than coffee and chocolate even though it took longer for tea to become a staple commodity in Britain. The growth in occurrences of the words fits well with the cultural and social history of the goods they refer to. In comparison with coffee and chocolate, tea is more often used to denote something other than just the actual drink, such as a mealtime or a social event or even as a verb. However, even though there is a growing number of different compounds based on the words tea, coffee, and chocolate over the period of the study, it is only the most basic ones that remain popular. Likewise, even though the meanings of the words tea, coffee, and chocolate widen, it is the most typical semantic meanings that are most frequent even in the later periods. While the corpora were not created for sociolinguistic studies, some conclusions can still be drawn. Most interestingly, it was found that men tended to use the word coffee more than women, and more often in connection to places outside the home. Correspondingly, tea was more frequently used by and in relation to women in a domestic setting than coffee and chocolate.
The legitimacy of the English used by non-native speakers is an is an ongoing debate. This debate is intertwined with the question of which variety of English should be used as the model in formal education. This study intends to provide information for both discussions by examining the relationship of the performance and the attitudes of Finnish undergraduate students of English (N = 40) with respect to American English (AmE) and British English (BrE). To this end, three variables are examined: 1) varietally distinct lexical choices, 2) target preferences, 3) language attitudes (on the dimensions of status and competence and social attractiveness). These variables enlighten the position of the two major varieties of English in Finland, and their interrelations provide information on whether the students use these varieties as instruments of identity construction. Lexical choices were studied through elicited translation, whereas target preference and language attitudes were measured on 5-point Likert scales. Lexical choices were generally American, but BrE was slightly favoured as a target variety. Nevertheless, the two variables correlated significantly. BrE was evaluated clearly higher on the scale of status and competence and almost equally with AmE on the scale of social attractiveness. Perceived social attractiveness proved to be a significant predictor of target preference, but status and competence did not. Correlation of social attractiveness and target preference, along with the conducted interviews, suggest that the students’ target preferences reflect their identity. The correlation of the target choice and actual production indicates that the students successfully use AmE and BrE to manifest that identity. The results suggest that formal English tuition should support students in attaining their self-selected target variety. They also support the legitimacy of non-native English by demonstrating that the lexical variation of non-native speakers can be socially motivated.
Digitaalisen viestinnän hymiöiden vaikutusta lausemerkityksiin ja sosiaaliseen toimintaan on harvoin lähestytty puhutun kielen näkökulmasta. Pyrin tutkielmallani selvittämään, miten livestreaming-sivusto Twitch.tv:n hymiöiden mahdolliset semioottiset ja yhteisölliset piirteet näkyvät puhutussa kielessä. Tutkimusprosessin tausta pohjautuu paralingvistiikkaan ja hymiöiden dynaamisiin semioottisiin piirteisiin. Lisäksi käsittelen puhutussa kielessä käytettyjen hymiöiden transmodaliteettia sekä käytäntöyhteisön (community of practice) vaikutusta hymiöiden merkityksien syntymiseen.
