Abstract The horse is one of the most important animals both culturally and historically in Finland. During the last 100 years the use of horses has changed as their roles in agricultural and forestry work and warfare have changed to companion in sport, therapy and recreation. In the 1960s the number of horses collapsed with the mechanization and urbanization. And yet their numbers are now rising with their popularity in recreation and sports. This study seeks to explain how the changing roles of the horse are displayed in the concepts of it, its handling and human-horse relationship in Finland. The time span of the research dates from the 1920s to 2000s but some background knowledge of horses from archaeology, history and ethnology are also used. This PhD study falls under the fields of cultural anthropology and human-animal studies. The main research material consists of interviews conducted by the researcher and written horse stories of Finnish people from the archives of the Finnish Literature Society. The theoretical-methodological framework in this study employs cognitive anthropology and narrative research. Those narratives which included personal experiences were analyzed with the interviews in order to find cultural models of human-horse relationship and to find the most common concepts and meanings given to horses. Furthermore, in the research the meaning of childhood experiences, different concepts of horses by different generations and genders, and the differences due to varying horse keeping traditions, such as trotting and riding, were identified. The analysis according to cultural model theory produced five cultural models based on the different concepts of horses and the ways they were handled such as servant, machine, hero, performer and therapist. Of these the servant and machine models were associated with the working horse, and in the servant model the human-horse relationship was described by trust, matching temperaments, and human leadership. Machine model included a mechanical idea of horses and was based on mistrust, disregard and domination towards the animal. The warhorse was seen as a hero that was anthropomorphized and respected more than other horses in the narratives. Of contemporary horses the sport horses were seen as performers and the human-horse relationship was based on practicality, reading the horse and human ambition. A leisure horse was considered a therapist with which the relationship was based on understanding, nurture and adventurous experience. The horse appears as a friend and an object of affection in all other models except the machine model.
The efficient and sustainable disposal of waste represents one of the major challenges for the human beings in the next future. The thermochemical conversion of livestock manure to biochar has received much interest thanks to its greenhouse gases extenuation and amendment power. In this study, horse manure was processed under pyrolytic condition at different temperatures, heating rate and residence times. In the first phase, a set of preliminary analysis aimed to assess the physical and chemical properties of the horse manure were carried out. Analogously, after the pyrolysis, the biochar was analysed both from the chemical and physical point of view. The results showed that the major impact on biochar yield (average −32%), pH (average + 40%), SSA (average 27.8 m2/g), PAH content, C (average + 37.4%) H (average −53.1%) N (average −15.5%) S (average −65.9%) O (average −37%) content was due to the HHT (highest heating temperature). Residence time (RT) and heating rate (HR) do not display a noticeable trend for most of the parameters. This analysis permitted to assess a range of pyrolysis parameters to treat this kind of biomass: 600°C (HHT), 10 °C/min (HR) and 2h (RT), in order to comply with EBC (European Biochar Certification) standard.
Domesticated horses live under different conditions compared with their extinct wild ancestors. While housed, medicated and kept on a restricted source of feed, the microbiota of domesticated horses is hypothesized to be altered. We assessed the fecal microbiome of 57 domestic and feral horses from different locations on three continents, observing geographical differences. A higher abundance of eukaryota (p < 0.05) and viruses (p < 0.05) and lower of archaea (p < 0.05) were found in feral animals when compared with domestic ones. The abundance of genes coding for microbe-produced enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in feral animals regardless of the geographic origin. Differences in the fecal resistomes between both groups of animals were also noted. The domestic/captive horse microbiomes were enriched in genes conferring resistance to tetracycline, likely reflecting the use of this antibiotic in the management of these animals. Our data showed an impoverishment of the fecal microbiome in domestic horses with diet, antibiotic exposure and hygiene being likely drivers. The results offer a view of the intestinal microbiome of horses and the impact of domestication or captivity, which may uncover novel targets for modulating the microbiome of horses to enhance animal health and well-being.
Muuntokelpoisen energian (ME) kulutusta verrattiin suomalaisiin (MTT 2006) ja ruotsalaisiin (SLU 2004) 6 12 kuukauden ikäisten varsojen ruokintasuosituksiin. ME:n kulutus (75.5 ± 11.8 MJ d-1, ka ± SD) oli keskimäärin 24.6 % ruokintasuosituksia suurempaa. Kulutus vaihteli talven aikana epälineaarisesti: y = 0.086x2 0.902x + 71.5, missä x on viikot marraskuusta maaliskuuhun (p<0.001, R2=0.63). Alhainen ympäristön lämpötila lisäsi ME:n kulutusta marraskuussa 1.8 % (p<0.001), joulukuussa 0.5 % (p<0.001) ja tammikuussa 0.2 % (p<0.05) yhden asteen lämpötilan laskua kohti ruokintasuosituksiin verrattuna, mutta ei vaikuttanut kulutukseen helmi- ja maaliskuussa. Tulokset osoittavat, että lisäenergiantarve vähenee talven aikana varsojen kasvaessa ja sopeutuessa kylmään elinympäristöön, eli kehon eristyksen lisääntyessä. Varsat kasvavat normaalisti kylmissä olosuhteissa, kun lisäenergiantarve huomioidaan ruokinnassa.
Horse manure is often a cost for horse owners, and in most cases, it is underutilized when its status as biodegradable waste means that it could potentially be used in renewable energy production and serve as a source of nutrient recycling. The selection of treatment methods requires information on possible environmental impacts; however, much readily available information on this aspect remains lacking. Therefore, in this study, the environmental impacts of horse manure management chains utilizing either saw dust or peat as bedding material are investigated using life cycle assessment, and global warming potential (GWP), eutrophication potential (EP), and acidification potential (AP) serve as impact categories. Selected manure management chains include different composting processes, anaerobic digestion, and combustion. The results reveal that combustion is the most favorable option for saw dust manure for all the studied impact categories, whereas anaerobic digestion is the most favorable for GWP reduction, and combustion is the best option for EP and AP reduction for peat manure. However, it should be considered that the selection of bedding material and treatment options for horse manure is restricted by the availability of bedding material and treatment options and by stable size and location.

This study was undertaken to tackle the challenge of attracting natural horsemanship practitioners to the academic art of riding and to enhance the horsemanship skills of trainees. The objective is to identify ways in which Kenneth Vansweevelt, a licensed trainer in the Academic Art of Riding, can improve horse bio-mechanics lessons. The Academic Art of Riding places significant emphasis on training horses to move in a bio-mechanically correct manner, which improves their health and performance. However, this approach has yet to be widely utilized in riding schools and is a relatively new concept for many horse owners. Therefore, it is crucial to understand effective teaching methods to help horse owners integrate equine bio-mechanics into their daily training. This study aims to provide insights into effective strategies that can be used to enhance the teaching of equine bio-mechanics in the academic art of riding. A survey was conducted among natural horsemanship practitioners to explore their knowledge and interest in equine bio-mechanics. To ensure dependable insights, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed. The study found that while the target group had a basic knowledge of equine bio-mechanics, they had gaps in specific exercise details. The group preferred a friendly learning environment with visual explanations and attention to horse emotions and were not interested in traveling for training due to bad past experiences. Facebook and Instagram were the preferred social media platforms for information on improving horse health and behavior problems. The study also highlighted a concern for horses' mental health. To improve customer engagement, recommendations include creating a customer review system for effortless feedback and tracking the length of customer relationships. Addressing the target group's main concern of behavior problems due to horses' mental imbalance can strengthen the relationship and trust with the trainer. Additionally, developing better training methods and increasing knowledge on bio-mechanics exercises can improve customer motivation and satisfaction, leading to increased work efficiency.

The work is aimed to develop horse simulator head and neck mechanism that could realistically imitate horse motion. Following development steps are discussed in this work: horse head and neck motion analysis for walk, canter and trot gaits; kinematics synthesis; analysis of mechanism dynamics; optimization of mechanism power consumption; mechanical design including CAD modeling, cost-saving and manufacturing optimization. The outcome of the work is the CAD model of horse head and neck mechanism that can reproduce desired horse motion patterns.
Com Scire (2020) is a collaborative art project with horses. The project searches for interspecies spiritual experience and knowledge-production through interspecies spiritual technology represented by a horse-size mirror. This paper compiles observations and learnings from the process of creating Com Scire with horses in Toiska farm, Ilmajoki, Finland. The research question evolves from asking what a horse sees in the mirror and can this be a spiritual experience for the horse? Com Scire is a part of a broader artistic research process that studies and develops interspecies, empathic, and performative rituals.
The dissolution and hydrolysis of wet fibre sludge in ionic liquids (ILs) with different reaction conditions are performed in this study. Novel types of hydroxyalkylimidazolium hydrogensulphate ILs, [glymim]HSO4, [hemim]HSO4 and [hpmim]HSO4, are especially designed and aimed to combine the dissolution and hydrolysis of wet fibre sludge in a one-step pretreatment. The results were obtained based on the analysis of total reducing sugars (TRS) with the DNS method. The dissolution and hydrolysis of fresh wild horse chestnut fruit (Aesculus hippocastanum) with the same ILs were also carried out as a comparison reference. Since fibre sludge is cellulose based and horse chestnut fruit is starch based, a direct comparison of the difference in functions between these ILs in one-step dissolution and hydrolysis were analysed based on the results.
In previous studies we have discovered that hulling of oats considerable improves its digestibility in equine diets (Särkijärvi & Saastamoinen 2003). However, hulling methods are variable and may lead to various outcomes. The more intensive the hulling is, the better the end product, but also the higher is the level of costs. In order to evaluate the appropriate hulling intensity, we wanted to study the effect of oat hulls on the diet digestibility. Eight mature Finnhorse mares were used in a study where effects of oat hulls on the apparent digestibility of nutrients was studied. Diets were based on dry hay and four different oat feeds (71:29 on dry matter basis). Oat feeds were based on hulled oats where four different amounts of oat hulls were added. The oat hull additions were: 1) 0% hulls, 2) 8% hulls, 3) 16% hulls and 4) 24% hulls. The last treatment represented the hull content of regular oats. Both, hulled oats and oat hulls, were first ground separately to a fine meal and then pressed into pellets, in order to prevent feed selection by horses. Treatments were assigned in a duplicated 4 x 4 Williams square design. A preliminary feeding of 16 days was followed by 5 day collection in each period. Faecal samples were taken twice a day during the collection period. Chromium mordanted straw was a marker for the estimation of digestibility. The inclusion of oat hulls did not affect digestibilities of diet nutrients statistically significantly. The digestibilities of nitrogen free extract and crude protein were slightly higher at 0% inclusion, and the digestibilities of crude fat and crude fibre were better for 16 and 24% inclusion rates, but as mentioned, the differences were not statistically significant. Probably the fine milling of the grain material has improved the digestibility of fibre of the oat hulls so tremendously, that the impairing effect of fibre did not show in diet digestibilities. Foals' locomotory and lying-down behavior can be an indicator of their health and development. However, measurement tools have not been well described with previously reported attachment sites used on limbs of adult horses unsafe for longer-term data collection in foals. In this study, a tail-mounted three-dimensional accelerometer was validated for monitoring foals lying, standing, and walking behavior. Eleven foals were recruited: four hospitalized and seven at private breeding stables. Accelerometers were attached to the dorsal aspect of the base of each foal's tail and their behavior was video recorded. Hospitalized foals had continuous video monitoring inside their stalls, and the breeding stable's foals were monitored outside at pasture for 1-5 periods (mean 42 minutes per period), depending how long they were at the facility. Acceleration was measured using 100 Hz frequency and mean, maximum, and minimum acceleration were recorded in 5 second epochs for x-, y-, and z-axes. Lying, standing, and walking behavior was monitored from videos of all foals, and the start and end time of each behavior was compared with the corresponding data from the accelerometer. Naive Bayes classifier was developed by using dynamic body acceleration and craniocaudal movement of the tail (tilt along z-axis), to predict a foal's lying behavior. The model was validated; the classifier achieved high accuracy in precision and in classifying foals' lying behavior (specificity, 0.92; sensitivity, 0.89; precision, 0.98; accuracy, 0.92). The overall accuracy for classifying walking and standing was also good, but the precision was poor (0.46 and 0.24, respectively). When standing and walking behavior was combined to a single “standing or walking” class, the precision improved (specificity, 0.62; sensitivity, 0.92; precision, 0.89; accuracy, 0.92). In conclusion, tail-mounted three-dimensional accelerometer can be used for monitoring foals' lying behavior. In addition, information regarding standing and walking can be gained with this method.
The study examines the horse trade and it’s special characteristics relative to the personal property legislation. The aim is to highlight the horse’s specific characteristics as personal property and consider the suitability of the applicable legislation to the horse trade. The review focuses in the quality errors as the horse-specific type of error, such as diseases and physical defects. It examines how the special features of the horse are taken into account to known standard-form contracts. The horse trade applies the same laws as any other trade of the movable property. Error-proofing is highlighted in detail by agreeing to the horse trade, as a complete and accurate horse does not exist. The seller's point of view, a successful trade negotiation process is to negotiate the probability of the error as small as possible. This makes possible the legislative instruments and in particular contract law means. The buyer's point of view, a successful trade is based on evidence she or he has been able to identify in advance of the horse's faults, and other undesirable characteristics. The buyer has to determine what errors she or he is willing to accept. The direct and indirect costs of the horse trade dispute can be high in relation to price that was originally paid. In the horse trade the only written document is often a statement of the ownership. A written commercial contract is not self-evident. It is important to make visible what is agreed, especially to the horse-trade-related legal issues. The legislation governing the trade of movable properties does not identify with sufficient precision the special features of the horse as an personal object. That is why the standard-form contracts and the check lists are needed to support the parties of the trade.
Aineistona tutkimuksessa on tapahtuman Helsinkin International Horse Show Instagram-julkaisut vuosilta 2014 ja 2019.
Interest in equine assisted interventions is growing but the working mechanisms are not clearly understood. If horses are expected to bring unique qualities, different to other animals to therapy, the underlying working mechanisms are likely to rely on horses’ special ways of being in interaction with humans. Interaction between human and horse is mainly body language and humans need to adjust their body language to the behavior of the horse to be able to form mutually understandable interaction. If behavioral interaction is assumed to have psychological consequences, measuring physiological measures such as heart rates can provide a way of measuring this interspecific communication. Additionally, if behavioral and physiological synchrony are connected between humans and horses, as it has been detected to be between humans, it is possible that this interactive relationship can be utilized in equine-assisted therapies to affect psychological processes. The purpose of this study was to investigate if behavioral synchrony of human and horse lead to physiological synchrony, which was measured as heart rate. In this study heart rates of humans and horses were synchronized always when horse and human were walking next to each other. No differences were found between synchronous and desynchronous walking situations. It was also investigated if heart rates were higher when walking in desynchrony compared to synchronous walking. Contrary to the hypotheses heart rates of the horses were higher when walking in synchrony. It is possible that the horses were more focused on the human when the behavior was synchronous and that caused heart rates to rise. Despite rigorous study design, it is possible that the results were explained by physiological demands instead of psychological factors. Individual differences between the horses were substantial and need to be taken into consideration as well. The results of this study indicate that interaction between humans and horses can affect the physiology of them both. Nevertheless, according to the results of this study synchronized walking is not crucial to form an interactive connection between humans and horses, simply walking side by side can be enough to form a connection. However, more studies are required to assess which components are important in forming synchronous interaction between humans and horses. In future, additional, and more accurate physiological measures should be used as well. In conclusion, the exact working mechanisms in equine assisted therapies requires more investigation.
Lisäksi laadin turvallisuuskirjan täyttämisen tueksi riskikartan, jossa on lueteltu hevostalliympäristössä olevia yleisimpiä vaaroja/vaaran aiheuttajia. Turvallisuusasiakirjapohjan täyttämällä ja riskikarttaa hyödyntämällä tallinpitäjä täyttää lain vaatimukset kyseistä asiaa koskien mutta jatkuva turvallisuuden kehittäminen ja turvallisuusasiakirjan sisällön laatu jää täysin tallinpitäjän vastuulle. Turvallisuusasiakirjapohjan sekä riskikartan lisäksi voisi luoda muita riskientunnistamiseen ja -arviointiin kannustavia työkaluja, jotta hevostallin turvallisuuden kehittäminen olisi kokonaisvaltaisempaa ja mielekkäämpää toteuttaa.
In this work, real-time monitoring of human body during horseback riding utilizing a horse simulator was conducted. Horseback riding has been found to be an effective form of therapy in different musculoskeletal disorders. The general objective of this work is to build a proof-of-concept prototype of a novel horseback riding physiotherapeutic simulator system. For this purpose, couple measurement sessions were handled, and results are presented in the current paper. The idea is to monitor body and brain-behaviour of the professional rider and non-professional rider while riding a horse simulator, using inertial and optical motion capture systems and electroencephalography. Three types of experiment were made, two experiments represent body behaviour and one represents brain behaviour. The data was recorded, filtered if needed and analyzed.
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma tarkastelee regionalismin käsitettä Nicholas Evansin romaanissa The Horse Whisperer (1995, suom. Hevoskuiskaaja). Kosmopolitanismi teoriana tuo pohjan kaupungin kuvaamisen tarkastelulle, sillä New Yorkin urbaani ympäristö on Evansin kirjassa tärkeässä roolissa maaseudun vastakappaleena. Lisäksi tarkastellaan niin Amerikan länteen kuin kaupunkeihinkin, erityisesti New Yorkiin liitettyjä myyttejä. Myyteistä tärkeimpänä käsitellään Frederick Jackson Turnerin rajaseututeoriaa. Regionalistinen ote on Hevoskuiskaajassa vahvasti läsnä.
The objective of this Bachelor thesis was to study to what extent Equine-assisted social pedagogy impacted the Life Management Skills of individuals with a physical and/ or cognitive impairment. To reach out to the target group, the author contacted the instructors who work in the field around Finland by email. Data for the study were collected quantitatively by sending an online questionnaire to the instructors. The survey included background questions about the participants and The Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire (Ox-PAQ). The Ox-PAQ form was filled in twice: first, the participants self-evaluated their daily Life Management Skills prior to starting with Equine-assisted social pedagogy, and secondly, the participants were asked to reflect on questions related to their Life Management Skills in the four preceding weeks. The instructors were asked to forward the e-form to their customers who belonged to the target group of the study. The results were collected over a time period of three weeks in March 2020. Thirteen individuals responded to the survey. Even though the response rate was quite low, some conclusions could be drawn from the information provided by the participants. Statistical analysis and explanatory approaches were applied in the analysis of the results. The results indicate that attending Equine-assisted social pedagogy once or twice a week had a beneficial impact on the participants in managing their daily activities. The results lead to the conclusion that Equine-assisted social pedagogy had an uplifting effect on the emotional level of the participants. They felt less stressed, anxious, sad, and depressed when managing their daily activities. This may demonstrate that Equine-assisted social pedagogy could be utilized as a useful tool to improve the Life Management Skills of individuals with a disability. Equine-assisted social pedagogy aims to increase social competence, social engagement and enhances the emotional well-being of individuals with a physical and/ or cognitive impairment. This in turn supports the individual’s functional capacity in the functioning of his/ her daily activities.
The purpose of this degree thesis was to describe parents’ experiences concerning possible changes in children’s volition, habituation and performance capacity in daily life, after the children had taken part of horse related activities. We have used literature and previous research concerning occupational therapy, animal assisted therapy, horse related activities, activities, riding therapy and functional impairment. As a frame of reference we have used Model of Human Occupation by Gary Kielhofner. The interview guide consists of different themes which are developed from Model of Human Occupation. The thesis has been done in co-operation with the riding therapy stable Team Rufus in Kirkkonummi. Qualitative research methods have been used in the study. We have interviewed five parents of children, with a functional impairment, that have taken part of horse related activities for at least one year. The informants have been contacted through Team Rufus and interviews were made at three different occasions at the riding therapy stable. Through this research we were able to point out a change in children’s volition, habituation and performance capacity in daily life. The most obvious changes could be noticed, according to the parents, in the motor function, motivation, interaction and social capabilities of the child. Horse related activities seem to have a positive impact on children’s daily life.
The objective of the study was to productize a new service for a South Karelian riding school. New service ideas which would have the potential to attract new customer groups to local riding stables were innovated and the most potential suggestion was selected. Three case companies were chosen to represent different types of riding schools in the area. The companies were interviewed to gather data for evaluating the service ideas. The interviews were half-structured and they were carried out in person and via email correspondence. The outcome of the thesis was a service product for one of the case companies. Further development regarding pricing is needed to launch the product. Based on the study, the riding school entrepreneurs are interested in widening their service offerings.
