Demand for new services and interest in health and wellbeing nowadays has forced the tourism industry to create new attributes of attraction in order to maintain customer flow at high levels. The situation with the international sanctions (including economic, diplomatic and sports sanctions) against Russia and the collapse of the Russian ruble has made it difficult to attract Russian customers to Finland as their ability to spend money on traveling has decreased significantly. Particularly the Finnish tourism industry has struggled with searching the ways to bring back the same turnovers that it had before the summer of 2014. The aim of this study is to identify the potential wellness customers of Peurunka Spa Hotel among Russian tourists. This is a quantitative research, which uses the data of 75 participants collected through a questionnaire. The data was acquired in 2014 as part of a research project of active and wellness tourism in the rehabilitation and wellness center Peurunka in Central Finland. The study compares attitudes and behaviors of Russian tourists before and after the tremendous changes on the tourism market that affected Finland and lowered the number of tourists from Russia there. The questionnaire includes four parts which each focus on certain aspects related to the case company, to Russian travelers and their expectation and experiences at the Peurunka Spa Hotel. The results of this study illustrate that among the factors that have a great impact in Russian customers is the usage of adequate promotion channels, depending on the age, gender, as well as that a destination referral from a friend or co-worker plays an important and is considered to be a reliable source of information for Russians. Additionally, the study discovered that Russian tourists tend to come back to the same facility if their previous experiences were enjoyable. The results also reveal that tourists who are concerned about their health and who are regularly physically active are more likely to be attracted by the wellness services of a holiday destination. The majority of the Peurunka’s customers belong to the category of family travelers, and therefore, the availability of family packages for all the services has a potential to increase their satisfaction. Most of the tourists from Russia belong to the middle-age category of customers, which means that the focus of services must be rather on wellness than on rehabilitation and medical diagnostics.
When a person changes the country of living, a new story about oneself begins. The plot is informed by its characters and setting— migrants, their families, and the surrounding community. According to the existing literature, acculturation is a long-lasting complicated process that depends on the interplay of various circumstances in a person's life (Sam & Berry, 2010). The object of the study was to explore the successful acculturation journey of three Russian-speaking educators working in the Finnish educational system. Using narrative inquiry, this study unfolds the participants' stories creating a layered narrative that encompasses many aspects of identity that intertwined to form a unique experience. To uncover the meaning-making of being a successful Russian-speaking migrant in Finland, in-depth interviews with three participants were conducted. The study sееks tо роrtrait depth and subtlеty in dеsсriрtiоns of the раrticipаnts. The imаgеs оf the раrticipаnts рrеsеnt а mоrе соmрlеx picturе thаn thоsе fоund in studiеs that examine migrants based upon only one or two traits, to the exclusion of others. Narrative content was analyzed, using a combination of deductive and inductive approaches. Five themes emerged from this study. First, a strong professional identity significantly improved the participants’ actions for integration into Finnish education. Second, the participants’ past life experiences served as a supporting structure for life after migration. Third, their ability to be effective learners facilitated the planning and implementation of goal-oriented activities as well as Finnish language learning. Fourth, the participants recognized luck in various manifestations as a fairly influential aspect in achieving goals and making the right choices and decisions, which helped a smoother acculturation process. Fifth, the cultural influence of the families on the participants’ attitudes to Finnish and Russian cultures were powerful; they resulted in such a way that each participant’s mindset was formed in a sophisticated way, like a unique patchwork of elements from a variety of cultures, collected under the umbrella of education completed in Russia and supplemented in other countries.
The current thesis provides content to the project called Tampere - St. Peters-burg connection (TASC). TASC is part of the wider project called Development centre of wellbeing in tourism conducted by the Research and Development (R&D) department of Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The aim of TASC- project is to create a cooperation network between business life and (R&D) operators in the Tampere Region in order to find out how the needs of Russian tourists could be satisfied and new demand created. Russian residents travelling to Finland have significant impact on the country's tourism field and the number of Russians travelling to Tampere Region is in-creasing every year. The Tampere Region has the potential to be one of the tourism destinations in Finland for Russians, but more development should be encouraged towards the Russian market. One of the problems is that demand and supply do not meet when considering the Russian markets. The current research was made to find out what services could be offered for Russians travelling in the Tampere Region. The authors conducted a questionnaire for the Russian tourists in the Tampere region to find out their primary and secondary travel motives. Interviews with the professionals support the data from the questionnaire. The collected data is processed with Tixel software and analysed with the product development process and Experience Pyramid. The results show that the main reasons for the Russians to come to Tampere are nature, culture, shopping and visiting friends or families. The services the Russians use most are accommodation, restaurants and shops, which shows that services based on nature and culture do not meet the demand. In addition to shopping trips, Russians wish to be offered more services which introduce the nature and culture of the area. Based on the results, the authors present ideas for developing services for the Russians customers in the Tampere region.

Research on multilingualism in the home has approached the family as a fixed unit thus neglecting the dynamic view of the family and its intersection with family language practices. The present study aims to address this gap by focusing on Russian-speaking mothers in Finland who have raised their children bilingually in single-parent as well as in dual-parent families. Russian speakers are the largest minority language group in Finland, and their number is constantly growing. The current study is a contribution to the research on family language practices in the Finnish context. It examines the nexus of shifts in family configurations and language practices and explores how the dynamic changes in family constellations shape language practices in four families. The study reveals that creating new kinships leads to shifts in the language practices of the peripheral family members and that forming voluntary kin can expand heritage language use and enable an overhearer and bystander role for children. Non-residential family members expand the family's linguistic repertoire and support the legitimacy of already established practices. Being sole caretakers enables mothers to encourage language practices that they consider beneficial for their children without encountering any resistance from other family members.

Tutkimukseni kohteena on venäläinen emigranttilehdistö vuosina 1919 - 1939. Emigranttilehdistön kieli on kehittynyt eräänlaisen substraatin pohjalta erityppisten ainesten kombinaationa. Se on säilyttänyt paljon vanhaa, lainannut runsaasti vierasperäistä ainesta ja mukauttanut neuvostokielen erikoispiirteitä omaan käyttöönsä.
The Russian outbound tourism to Finland during the economic downturn Russian tourists discovered Finland as a great travel destination directly after the fall of the Soviet Union. Convenient location, beautiful Nordic nature, different style of service compared to the Soviet Union and good quality of products. All these aspects have been attracting Russians for many years. At the moment the economic situation is not stable in Finland and Russia, hence the Russian outbound tourism is facing challenging times: the number of Russian customers dramatically decreased in recent years (2014-2016). The aim of the study was to come up with recommendations how the attractiveness of Finland could be improved among Russian tourists regarding existing services, facilities and overall opportunities. Currently, the Russian travel market has vastly changed, influenced by the situation with sanctions against Russia due to the annexation of Crimea. Because of the fall of the Russian rouble, it became too expensive to travel abroad for Russian tourists. A lot of these tourists cancelled their trips during 2015. In particular, the decrease happened before New Year holidays when the sharpest drop in Russian currency was observed; this caused financial problems for Russian tour operators. 70% of Russian travel companies bankrupted and those that survived shifted their businesses towards inbound and incoming tourism. Thousands of people from the travel sphere lost their jobs and were forced to change their choice of career. However, the Finnish travel market is trying to bring back Russian customers and interested in improving and adapting to the different situation in the travel sphere. The author of the thesis used two research approaches: qualitative (interview with a representative of the Finnish travel market) and quantitative (online questionnaire among Russian travel experts). Using the quantitative data, it was possible to look through possible reasons for the decline in the number of Russian tourists traveling abroad. The qualitative data helped to analyse the current situation with Russian tourists and find ways to improve it from the Finnish travel market point of view. The goal of the research was to get responses, new ideas and opinions from Russian travel experts how to fix the current situation with the flow of tourists coming from Russia. After analysing the data, the author came up with three key recommendations for improving the attractiveness of Finland among Russian tourists: pricing, advertisement and new activities. The results showed that Russians are still looking into traveling to Finland. Russian tour operators pointed out the fall of the Russian rouble as one the largest problem affecting the Russian tourists. However, the Finnish side is always ready for adaptation, negotiation and finding new ways of collaboration with the transformed Russian travel companies.
