In December 2019 a new coronavirus disease, COVID-19, started spreading from Wuhan, China. According to World Health Organization, WHO, COVID-19 has spread globally so it is considered a pandemic. The Finnish institute for health and welfare (THL) has declared that people over 70 years of age are more likely to suffer from a severe case of COVID-19. Guidance from the Finnish Government for people over 70 years of age was to stay in quarantine. The aim of this thesis was to find out from a specific group, people over 70 years of age, which factors have contributed in overcoming the quarantine period, how the quarantine has been followed and how the physical condition has been affected by the quarantine. The goal was to focus on the challenges the quarantine has brought, how the quarantine has been faced and if the quarantine has created any substantial harm or possible benefits. At the same time the target was to bring out the message from elderly people. The research question in this thesis was: Which factors have supported elderly people to cope with the recommended quarantine caused by the COVID-19 pandemic? This thesis is a qualitative study, for which material was gathered through a thematic interview. In total the interview had five participants from an age range of 70 to 85. The interviewees were selected with two main criteria; more than 70 years of age and living independently at home. The interviews were held face to face, except for one telephone interview, during July and September 2020. All interviews were recorded and transcribed for detailed analysis with content analysis. The findings indicated that the factors which supported coping with the quarantine were accepting the situation, following the recommendations, good support networks and maintaining physical condition. After the initial confusion the motivation for quarantine was understood and the situation accepted. Experience gained through professional career helped in understanding the situation and contributed to maintaining physical condition. The findings also indicated, however, that there was some confusion on the guidance from the government and why the quarantine was limited to people over 70 years of age. The importance of support networks was highlighted in coping with the quarantine period and receiving support. Attention was paid to maintaining physical condition even though sports services were closed. None of the interviewees faced weakening in their physical condition due to the quarantine. Further research could be carried out to clarify the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic on younger people as many of the interviewees shared the concern how the pandemic affects younger generations. The information on the well-being of young people is essential as the possibility of another pandemic in the future cannot be excluded.
