This thesis explores the commercialization of typefaces and the importance of typographic choices for a company's visual identity. The basis for the research is laid by first going through the phases of the history of Finnish typeface design, which, as the work progresses, reflects on the present and examines whether Finnish typeface design has the same reputation in the world as Finnish design.

The thesis introduces the process of designing a typeface from ideation to implementation and publication. The thesis opens up the means of publishing and selling a typeface, the licenses related to buying typefaces, and how to protect typefaces with copyright.

The aim of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of Finnish typeface design and its history and to illustrate the importance of typeface design for companies via different examples and going through the design process. The thesis serves as an information package for any company considering having a signature typeface made, as well as a guide for designers interested in designing and selling typefaces. A questionnaire was also carried out for Finnish typeface designers to provide further information and insight.
