Teatteri on uskon asia : kristillinen teatteri ja kirkkodraama 2010-luvulla Suomessa

This thesis investigates the special features of Christian theatre and church drama in this decade and is looking into their contributions with respect to this society. The thesis dives into the history of church drama and Christian theatre from the Middle Ages to the present day and presents four groups in the fields of church drama and Christian theatre in the 2010's. The research method consisted of interviews. Two of the interviewed theatre groups, Theatre Kallio and Theatre Beta, are working in the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church, while Theatre Kumbe and Theatre Agape work as free accosiations. The directors of the groups were interviewed as theme interviews.

The present thesis discusses the relationship between Christian theatre and the performing arts degree program based on the experiences of the authors. The work raises the following questions: what kind of knowledge can the degree program in performing arts provide to church drama? Can it create visions for the future Christian theatre and church drama in Finland.

Research concerning church drama and Christian theatre in Finland has not been extensively conducted. The significance of the thesis is based on its documentary nature of the recent history and this moment. The purpose of defining church drama and Christian theatre is to open the terms and concepts to drama instructors. The thesis shows that Christian theater is both increasing in versatility and picking up new forms and therefore, more professionals with a wide range of tools are needed in the fields of church drama and Christian theater.
