The Integration of Research and Development and Education -The pedagogical challenges and the chance ofteaching

The research and development (R&D), education and regional development are the three important tasks of Finnish polytechnics. This research focus on the integration of R&D and education in the framework of the Polytechnic pedagogy. The theoretical framework consist of the literature considering professional expertice, new learning environments and work-based learning. The aim of this research is to describe and evaluate the integration of R&D and education in the framework of one project called "Ennaltaehkäisevää huumetyötä asuinalueyhteisöissä". The projectcarried out 1.4.2005-30.4.2006 in the Mikkeli Polytechnic. The research questions are the following: 1. How does teacher experience R&D-project as studentslearning environment? 2. What kind of theory / theoretical framework could helpto analyse the learning process in the R&Dproject? The data of this study consists of teachers interviews and my own experiences and notes. The results of the study showed that the teachers's experiences of integrating R&S-work andeducation were mainly positive. The project offered both teachers and students chances to deepen their knowledge and competencies and widen their cooperation networks. At the same time teachers and student were able to be a part of development the working life. The challenges of the integration concern the purposes, contents, guidance and evaluation of students when they are studying in R&D-projects. The field of the integration of R&D and education is still complex and there are several factors which affects to the learning. The ideal situationis that we are able to form so called integrative learning environment that offers chance to create innovative networks between teachers, student and working life experts.
