Review of nutrition teaching and revision of nutrition curriculum in the Savonia University of applied sciences of health professions during 2006

Nutrition has fundamental effects on human health and disease. The use of nutrition knowledge is not efficient enough in public health care when treating or preventing diseases. In public health care there is notenough positions for authorized nutritionists. This is why all health care professionals have practical need for basics of nutrition knowledge. Unfortunately nutrition knowledge of all health care professionals is not adequate. One important step in improving nutrition knowledge of health care professionals is increasing nutrition teaching in basic professional training. Nutrition knowledge of graduating registered nurses, public health nurses and midwifes must be increased from current during their studies. The amount of nutrition must be increased either by adding nutrition courses or by integrating morenutrition to current courses. In my development project I have reviewed and renewed the nutrition curriculum of the Savonia University of applied sciences of health professions. As a consequence of the new nutrition curriculum the amount of nutrition teaching will increase in nursing programs significantly from current. The new curriculum will betaken into use during autumn 2006 when new students will start their studies.
