Designing a steel support structure to be reusable and modifiable for transporting steel sheets

The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to design a transportation crate for steel plates to be used by the company Viafin Terästorni Oy. The company now uses a dispensable transportation box and the aim of this thesis was to design a structure which was both reusable and the size could be modified based on the size of the plates being transported. Structure is to be made of high-strength structural steel and it can be manufactured of either steel plates or steel beams.

Design work began by drawing sketches of both plate and beam solutions. The different designs were then presented to representatives of the company who chose the best solutions for further development. Initially two designs were chosen; a structure made of steel plates and structure made of steel beams. 3D-models were compiled of both of these structures. The ability to modify the size of the structure was accomplished by using telescopic structures with beams that were able to slide within one another and by changing to longer beams or plates accordingly. For reusability it was important to make sure that the size of the structure could be made small enough that transporting it back to the factory was sensible. In order to do that the structures could be taken apart or folded into as small as possible. After both of the structures were modelled they were again shown to the company’s representatives who made the choice for the final design.

Analytical calculation was used initially to find the correct sized beams to withstand the applied forces. It was important when choosing beams that the telescoping ability remained. After calculating the beam sizes, smaller details were also designed, such as the lifting brackets and welds. The finished model was then modelled accurately into a 3D-model and then finally checked using FEM-analysis.

In this thesis a completely new design and structure were developed for the company’s use.
